Gonville and Caius College - Cambridge University
Caius College Cambridge

The female head depicted is one of six carved by the workshop for Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University. These followed a design by the Classical architect John Simpson, and were supplied for the new dining room at the college, based on inner chamber of the ruined temple of Apollo at Bassae in the Peloponnese.

Standing 14" high, it is a 3/4-scale representation in Classical Grecian form, carved in European Oak.

The detail to the hair alone involved many hours of painstaking work.

Also carved for this project were four large console brackets in the Classical style.
